Speaking to Construction News at an event ahead of the official naming of the new Antarctic research ship, members of the Bam Nuttall team who built the wharf to accommodate the RRS David Attenborough, revealed the challenges of working in such an uncompromising environment.

Operations Director, Graham Hopper said that his team of 60 workers, who underwent psychological evaluations prior to working in such isolated conditions, worked 7am-7pm, six days a week, to make the most of the time they had.

The cost of just transporting the 4,500 tonnes of necessary equipment and steel was £2m and took a month, with the UK built steel frame being 'flat-packed' to maximise space for shipping. Diggers also had to be fitted with long-reach attachments and training was provided via an Xbox simulator before leaving the UK.

The project is due to be completed in April next year.
